Granite Countertops and Radon?
When buying a house, there are things to make sure are checked out. That's why it is always recommended that you get a qualified inspector to give the home a thorough going over. One of the tests that is often done is for radon gas. Radon gas is naturally occuring and only becomes an issue when it builds up inside your house. If levels are found to be too high, a remediation system can be installed that will lower levels to well within the EPA's acceptable range.
There is one concern showing up recently that no one much thought of. That is radon being emitted from granite counter tops. Since the granite was once bedrock it is possible that it contains radioactive material that would emit radon gas. Here is video from the Today show that addresses granite and radon .
I am not sure where this will lead in the future, but it certainly is something to be cautious of.
If you want to know more about Radon, you can go to Vermont Department of Health's website to read up on it.
